Step 1: Sketch Your Plan
Start off with drawing a sketch of your fence on a piece of paper including measurements as you go. For best results, we recommend using graph paper and drawing the sketch to scale but a rough draft is sufficient if you have experience with these types of projects. Once the sketch with measurements is completed, mark where each corner post, end post, and gate post will be located. Now it's time identify your line posts. If you plan to order 6 ft ( 42in ) width panels, your line posts should be marked every 6 ft on your sketch. Please note that 8 ft width panels are available in most grades as well. Finally, mark where the gate(s) will be located. Your sketch plan is complete so let's figure your order.

Step 2: Figure Your Order
Count the number of corner posts, end posts, line posts, and gate posts separately and record the total of each one. We recommend two gate posts with a single gate to increase the sturdiness to both sides. Double gates require at least two gate posts.
All fence panels, except for residential grade, come in two widths, 6 ft ( 72in ) and 8 ft ( 96in ). Residential grade panels are available in 6 ft width only. Divide each run by the width of the panel to determine how many you need. For example, if you have one straight run of 60 ft and a second straight run of 30 ft, calculate as follow. Divide the 60 ft run by a 6 ft panel which equals 10 panels. Then, divide the 30 ft run by a 6 ft panel which equals 5 panels. 10 panels + 5 panels = 15 total 6 ft panels. How tall do you want your fence? Several heights are available ranging from 3 foot to 6 foot panels. Record the number of panels, whether it's 6 ft or 8 ft panels, and the height you selected.
Be sure the width measurement of your gate(s) was not included when figuring the total number of panels. Gates are ordered separately which leads us to where we are now. Both single gates and double gates are available online at Select Fence Distributors. Single gates are available up to 16 foot and may be used as both walkway and driveway gates. Double gates are essentially two single gates and available up to 20 foot but please note that the hardware does differ between a single and double gate. All the required hardware is included with each gate order and the hardware will be defined by whether you order a single or double gate. Take this time to calculate the number of gates your need. If you have a 6 foot space for a gate, you could order a 6 ft single gate or a 6 ft double gate. Do you want a fence gate that is taller than your fence panels? Please note the height difference if so.
Time for accessories. Do you want finials for your panels or ball caps for your posts? Browse our fence accessories to see the various accessories Select Fence Distributors has available for you and your new fence. To determine the number of accessories to order, refer to the scale provided on each individual accessory page. For example, view the finials fence accessory.
Final piece to the puzzle is the color of your fence. What color blends in well with the landscaping surrounding the fence area? Several colors are available including black, white, bronze, green, and sandstone. Certain grades and styles may not come in all colors but several options are available for each one. Decide on a color and move on to placing your order.
